Chinese Steamed Fish With Red Dates and Chinese Yam

A quick Chinese steamed fish recipe that is packed with flavors. It’s so easy that it almost feels like cheating.

I love fish. Oven-baked crunchy fish fillet, sweet and sour deep-fry cod and butter salmon, I can name tons of fish dishes I live by.

But some days, I don’t have enough time to pull off a complicated recipe, but I still want some good protein in my meal. That’s why I love Chinese steamed fish.

This classic home cooking dish in Canton requires minimum preparation and cooking time. It’s so easy that it almost feels like cheating.

But the mixed flavor of the sweet red dates and savory soybean sauce brings out the best of the fish. Serve with rice, and you’ll have a plate licking dinner ready in 30 minutes.

What type of fish should I use?

In this recipe, I use fresh grass carp fillet. It is super tender and cooks quickly, perfect for a weeknight steam dish.

If you can’t find grass carp in local stores, feel free to switch it to codfish, tilapia or red snapper.

What is Chinese Yam?

Chinese yam, also called Chinese potato or Japanese nagaimo, has a similar texture of potato and taro root. In Mandarin, it’s named 山药 (Shanyao) or 淮山 (Huaishan) depending on the origin.

I love Chinese yam so much because it’s a good source of carbs and dietary fiber. And just like other starches, it takes up the flavor of the sauce.

I also added Chinese yam to the one-pot Braised Chinese Soy Sauce Chicken Recipe, and it didn’t disappoint.
